WELCOME TO HEAD & NECK ROBOTIC SURGERY IN THE H&N
Edge Medical is a medical technology company based in Shenzhen, China, focused on the development of robotic platforms for minimally invasive surgery. Over the last few years, the company has built a broad robotic portfolio that closely follows — and in many aspects mirrors — the architectural principles established by Intuitive Surgical.
The Edge Robotic Surgery Platform (MSP2000)
Edge’s current flagship offering is the MSP2000 Robotic Surgery Platform, a fully integrated system that combines both single-port and multi-port robotic surgery under a single surgeon console and shared visualization infrastructure.
This integrated approach is particularly noteworthy. Early concepts from Intuitive Surgical explored (and abandoned) a similar idea — a unified console capable of driving both single-port and multi-port platforms — but Edge has now brought this concept to market as a commercial system.
The MSP2000 received CE marking in October 2025, allowing its clinical use and commercialization in Europe.
Single-Port System (SP1000)
The Edge Single-Port Endoscopic Surgical Robot (SP1000) was designed to perform minimally invasive procedures through a single small incision, using multiple articulated instruments and an endoscopic camera introduced via a single access port.
Preclinical studies demonstrated the safety and feasibility of the SP1000 system. In particular, experimental work in porcine nephrectomy models showed that complex surgical tasks could be performed reliably, supporting its potential translation into clinical practice.
From a conceptual and mechanical standpoint, the SP1000 is a very close analogue of the da Vinci Single-Port system, adopting similar solutions for instrument articulation, camera control, and confined-space surgery.
Multi-Port System (formerly MP1000)
In parallel, Edge developed its multi-port robotic system, initially known as MP1000, now fully integrated into the MSP2000 platform.
According to the manufacturer, this system has undergone multiple iterative evolutions, focused on:
As with the single-port platform, the overall design philosophy, patient cart configuration, and workflow are clearly inspired by the da Vinci Xi multi-port system, which has defined the standard for soft-tissue robotic surgery over the past decade.
Positioning and Outlook
Edge Medical enters the European market at a time when robotic surgery is no longer a novelty. Its systems are based on well-understood, proven architectural concepts, offering familiarity and accessibility to surgeons already trained on existing platforms.
What remains to be seen is how Edge will evolve in areas that are now shaping the next generation of surgical robotics — including haptics, cloud connectivity, data integration, and AI-assisted surgical support. Real-world clinical experience will ultimately determine where the MSP2000 platform fits within an increasingly competitive and rapidly evolving robotic surgery landscape.
